Step 6: Inspect Suspicious Marks

Using the tip of your finger or a cotton swab, gently rub the questionable area to test for something that looks like fine grit. If you use your finger, you can often feel a fine gritty texture as well. If this surface material seems to come loose easily from the book and you can see something that looks dusty on the end of your finger or swab, this is likely evidence for the presence of mold. The “dust” is actually spores that have been released by the mold.
